So bored with the USA?

Three women quietly creating some of the most revolutionary watercolours in America.

The Clash wrote a song called “I’m So Bored With The USA.” And sometimes I’d like to tack the words “Watercolor Scene” onto the end of that title. In so many of our national and international exhibitions, the paintings on display are technically beyond reproach but somewhat homogeneous. Artists tend to paint the same subjects year after year. This results in a consistent and instantly recognisable body of work with undeniable commercial appeal for those artists. But after a while this consistency leaves me cold and thinking little more than Well, he’s painted another tulip, hasn’t he?
