Guy Gruwier — Light as the Subject

Belgian master Guy Gruwier is widely recognised as one of Europe’s premier contemporary watercolourists, renowned for his dramatic interplay of deep shadows, glowing light and urban realism.

Background & Early Career

Born in Poperinge, Belgium, Gruwier showed an early passion for visual art. He pursued formal artistic training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, earning a degree in graphic design and illustration. He spent his early career working as a professional illustrator, graphic artist and art teacher. This intensive background in design honed his rigorous understanding of draughtsmanship, perspective and composition — skills that eventually provided the foundation for his full-time transition into fine art watercolour. His abilities and professional approach earned him an Invitation to exhibit amongst the world’s elite watercolour Masters at IWM2026 in the UK.  Guy is invited back for IWM2028 where he will exhibit, do a live demo in the IWM Arena, and lead a workshop., (Live IWM2028 Schedule will be released later.
